At the “Stand for Sudan” Platform, we are preparing a Practical Advocacy Guide designed to train Sudanese living in Western countries on how to make our people’s voices heard in parliaments and among decision-makers especially in light of what is happening now in El Fasher and across Sudan.
While we finalize the full guide in the coming days, here are key steps for effective action:
Who Can Meet with a Member of Parliament?
In most Western countries, any resident living within a Member of Parliament’s constituency can request a meeting—citizenship is not required. The main condition is having a local address proving that you live in their district.
Why Is a Meeting Important?
A direct meeting is one of the most powerful advocacy tools. It allows you to present verified reports, photos, and testimonies about atrocities and counter the disinformation that legitimizes support for militias.
Steps to Contact Your MP
- Find your MP through your national parliament’s official website using your postal address.
- Send a short message to their official email or through the contact form on the parliament website.
-
Use a simple message like:
I am a resident of your constituency and would like to schedule a meeting to discuss the humanitarian situation in Sudan and the role our country can play in protecting civilians.
- If you receive no reply, call the MP’s office to request a meeting.
- The meeting can be individual or with a small group from the Sudanese community.
What to Say During the Meeting
- Introduce yourself briefly: name, place of residence, and that you are part of the Sudanese community.
- Thank the MP for their time.
- Summarize the current humanitarian crisis, especially in El Fasher.
- Explain that the UAE is providing military and financial support to the militia responsible for atrocities.
- Focus on what is relevant to your country (see below).
- Ask for practical actions such as raising a parliamentary question or contacting the foreign ministry.
- End by asking for follow-up: Could your team inform me of any upcoming sessions or actions related to Sudan?
Suggested Focus Points by Country
- United Kingdom: Review export licenses for arms and dual-use equipment to the UAE.
- United States: Designate the Rapid Support Forces and expand sanctions to include financiers.
- France: Suspend defense and security cooperation with the UAE and question the foreign ministry.
- Germany: Strengthen oversight of exports of technical and military components to the UAE and review the EU’s overall stance.
- Canada: Apply the Magnitsky Act to sanction militia leaders and their sponsors, and review security and economic relations.
What the Upcoming Guide Will Include
- Recent reports from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
- Verified photo and video archives documenting violations.
- Talking points and questions tailored for each relevant country.
- Templates for meeting requests and follow-up emails.
